Inokim OX S review: from Amsterdam to Texel on one full battery

Originally Israeli Inokim is here. And not with just one e-scooter. The range now consists of four different models.

Within this selection, the Inokim OX S seems to be the flagship. And let us put this very model to a spirited test. We take you through.

Long story short

The Inokim OX S is a scooter in the high-end segment and one of the strongest e-scooters currently available. The difference from a budget e-scooter is mainly seen in the use of the sturdy materials that make up the OX S.

The OX S is definitely not the right choice for those looking for a simple, cheap e-scooter. But all the more for those looking for a force of power, endurance and quality packed into an electric scooter.

Meet the Inokim OX S

Looking at the Inokim OX S, a few things immediately catch your eye. The front wheel is connected to the scooter with a ‘front fork’. Besides looking futuristic, you notice this significantly in the riding experience.

Looking at the technical specifications and performance of the Inokim OX S, the company seems to be targeting the ‘serious’ rider. This is not a toy. No, this is more of a worthy alternative of a scooter.

On the road with the Inokim OX S

Before you hit the road with the Inokim OX S for the first time, you need to do two things: tighten the handlebars and attach the mudguard.

With the included spanner and hexagon set, you have done this in no time. And then came the big moment: ‘Let’s hit the road, Jack’.

With a high-end electric scooter, expectations are just a tad higher. But during the first few metres, the sublime riding comfort was immediately apparent.

And this did not only seem to catch our eye. With its appearance, this e-scooter is a nice eye-catcher when you hit the road with it.

Ride comfort should be one of your main arguments for buying this e-scooter. The build quality [and hence sturdiness] of this e-scooter is so robust that you will glide smoothly over the road surface.

This is partly due to the suspension and detached front fork with which you don’t feel vibrations creeping through into the handlebars.

Speed: up to 39 km/h

The Inokim OX S pulls up after the well-known kick start. In other words; you slow down and can then accelerate. You can shift between three gears, reaching a maximum speed of 39 km/h in third gear.

First gear: Acceleration in first gear is ‘gentle’. In our test, we achieved a maximum speed of 13 km/h in this gear.

Second gear: second gear immediately feels a lot sportier. You now really notice the 1300W engine’s hefty pulling power. On flat terrain, we reached a maximum speed of 29 km/h in this gear.

Third gear: if you want to get the most out of this e-scooter, leave it in third gear. In our test, we reached a maximum speed of 39 km/h within +- 5 seconds.

What positively surprised us is the safe feeling with which you stand on this e-scooter even at a speed of 39km/h. You notice from everything that the 1300W motor packs a huge amount of power, but that this is expressed in a safe way.

Accelerate with your thumb

Another micro-detail that sets the OX S apart from many other e-scooters is the comfortable throttle. This still sometimes feels cheap and has a texture that starts to irritate your thumb after a while.

Especially when you go on long rides [and you can, with a maximum range of 110 km], it is rather nice if this does not start to irritate.

Range: up to 110 kilometres on one battery

One of the most impressive features of the Inokim OX S is its range. It is a whopping 110 kilometres in Eco mode.

To illustrate: with this, you can thus drive from Amsterdam to Den Helder on one battery, to cover the last kilometres across the water while driving to Texel before you really need to recharge. Impressive.

In Full-speed mode [maximum speed of 39 km/h], this gives you a range of 60 kilometres. This too is noteworthy, when you consider that the average range of an e-scooter is around 25 kilometres.

Dual braking system

Just like a scooter, the Inokim OX S has two hand brakes that separately brake the front and rear tyres. The front brake consists of a drum brake and the rear of a disc brake.

With brakes tightly applied, the OX S has a safe braking distance, even at high speeds. From a speed between 34 and 39 km/h, you will come to a standstill in less than 2.5 seconds.

Personally, we liked the presence of two hand brakes. Of course, we are used to this from most bikes and scooters, with which this feels familiar.

It takes no time to get used to this and you don’t have to think in a split-second which brake to press when you suddenly need to come to a stop.

Battery and charging time

With a maximum range of 110 kilometres, you probably won’t need to charge the Inokim OX S every day. This unprecedented range does come with a hefty charging time.

It takes an average of 14 hours for the Lithium Ion, 60V, 25.6 A/h battery to be fully charged again. That’s snappy, but not surprising when you consider the range here.

Weight and portability

With a sturdy e-scooter also comes a sturdy weight. The Inokim OX S is not an e-scooter that you easily lift with you and store under your seat in the train.

And that is precisely the charm of this electric monster; it can rightly call itself alternative to a scooter.

Back to weight. The total weight of the e-scooter is 33.5 kg. Unless you do some heavy lifting at the gym every day, this will be quite heavy for most to lift ‘just for a moment’.

Nevertheless, it is still possible to take the OX S [for example] on holiday. This is because you can fold the scooter. A clip is attached to the bottom of the handlebar to unlock it.

You then pull this back, where it automatically attaches to the rear wheel. Once folded, the dimensions are 108 x 59 x 54 cm.

You also unfold the handlebar with the same ease. The clip that holds the handlebar upright is fitted with extra rubber band that secures it in place.

Display and controls

The display is located on the right side of the handlebars and looks pretty ‘basic’ at first glance. It is a bit reminiscent of a small bike computer.

Still, the display fits well with what the OX S exudes: no-nonsense quality.

On the display, you can read the current speed, acceleration, battery level, mileage and distance of your last trip. The advantage of the placement of the display is that you can also operate it while riding. There are three buttons on the display [measuring 5 x 3 cm] that allow you to control all the necessary functionalities:

  • On/off button: holding the middle button for 2 seconds switches the OX S on and off.
  • Gears: press 1x top button to shift up one gear and 1x bottom button to shift back down again.
  • Lighting: press and hold the middle button for a few seconds to switch on the lights. Note: the lights are equipped with a light sensor. The lights automatically go into ‘sleep mode’ when the environment is light enough.

The lighting

Two front lights are mounted on the front of the deck. These are placed a lot lower than on other e-scooters.

Whether this actually improves or worsens visibility? We are not quite sure about that yet.

What we do know is that the lights are bright enough to stand out in the dark. Because lights are mounted on two sides, Inokim has ensured that the front light is not completely blocked by the front wheel when going through a corner.

A subtle detail on the side of the tail light is the brand name engraved in it. The tail light is placed at the right rear of the scooter. Besides its function as a tail light, it also serves as a brake light, when you squeeze either [or both] brakes.

The steering wheel

When you see the Inokim in person, you will notice that, with a handlebar height of 124 cm, it is higher than the average e-scooter. This makes you feel more like an equal participant in traffic, among all other road users.

The sturdy 59 cm-wide handlebars feature smooth grips on both sides. Again, these grips look a bit like a mountain bike.

In addition, the handlebars have a bell attached on the left side. Not quite what you expect on an e-scooter like the Inokim OX S, but practical when you need to pass somewhere.

Tyres and deck

The tyres of an e-scooter have a great influence on the riding comfort of an e-scooter. The sublime riding comfort of the Inokim OX S is therefore partly made possible by these tyres.

The OX S is equipped with 10″ pneumatic tyres. The tyres are no less than 7 cm wide and feature a sturdy tread. This tread also makes the Inokim OX suitable for off-road terrain.

The big advantage of pneumatic tyres: driving comfort. The disadvantage: you have to inflate them once in a while or change them (in case of a puncture).

We found that inflating the tyres can still be a challenge due to the valve placement. This takes a bit more time the first time to find a knack for this.

The deck

At 58 centimetres long and 21 centimetres wide, the deck is considerably larger than we are used to from the average e-scooter.

Another advantage of the deck is the height at which it hangs. When riding, the deck hangs 12 centimetres above the ground.

This is no luxury when taking the OX S for a ride through the woods. You won’t just get stuck on any branch or bump.

Final verdict

The key question: do we recommend the Inokim OX S? Yes, we do if you are looking for the crème de la crème among e-scooters and have a fair amount of money to spend on it.

With this e-scooter, you get everything [and more] you would expect from a high-end electric scooter. For this reason, the Inokim OX S gets a 9/10 from us in the test.
