Boosted Rev review: the Hummer among e-scooters

An unprecedentedly powerful drive, wrapped in a strong piece of e-scooter. With a big rucksack of expectations, we took the Boosted Rev for a comprehensive test. Preview our final verdict: this is what you want to experience.

Long story short

The Boosted Rev exudes quality in every detail. The extreme power of this e-scooter is wrapped up in a sturdy jacket. This is a high-end electric scooter that you can enjoy for a long time.

This electric scooter from Boosted Boards lived up to our expectations. And exceeded. Navigate through our findings:

1. Tops and flops of the Boosted Rev

+ Unprecedented power: from 0 to 39 km/h in 7 seconds
+ Build quality: refined to the last detail
+ Charge time: full battery in just 3 hours

– Price: priced above average

2. Unboxing

The Rev comes with a hefty box. Even with the packaging, you notice that Boosted Boards has put the necessary effort into packing this e-scooter. This is all you get:

1x Boosted Rev
1x Instructions for assembly and use
1x Charger
1x Wrench
2x Extra rear tyre
2x Extra front tyre
2x Boosted stickers

Once unpacked, the scooter is operational in no time. All you need to do yourself is tighten the bolt that secures the handlebars.

From the factory, the Rev has a half-full battery. Want to fully charge the battery first (which is not necessary, by the way) before you hit the road? Then allow about 1.5 hours for this.

3. This is what you want to know

Maximum speed: the Boosted Rev reaches a top speed of 39 km/h in third ‘gear’. Read more about the speed.

Range: the 1500W motor gives you a maximum range of 32 kilometres. Read more about the range.

Charging time: the powerful battery charger ensures the Boosted Rev is fully charged in just 3 hours. Read more about the battery and charging time.

4. Speed: fly to 39 km/h

The real speed demon can get his fill with the Boosted Rev. With a maximum speed of 39 km/h, the top speed is over 50% higher than the average e-scooter. This makes the Boosted Rev one of the fastest e-scooters at the moment.

This speed is made possible by the 1500-watt motor. The Rev has both front and rear wheel drive.

This ensures that the power is distributed over both wheels and you don’t fall forward or backward when you accelerate briskly. What’s unique about the Boosted Rev is that you don’t have to turn off to drive off. You can accelerate from standstill and drive off.

4.1 Three gears

Especially when you are on an e-scooter for the first time, the power of the Boosted Rev can be overwhelming. For this reason, the scooter is equipped with three gears:

First gear: speed of +- 25 km/h

Second gear: a touch faster, up to +-30 km/h

Third gear: for the real adrenaline rush, a top speed of 39 km/h

In top gear, you are at 25 kilometres per hour in less than 3 seconds. You feel the extreme pulling power when you accelerate.

If you throw the throttle fully open from standstill in third gear, the Rev is even capable of spinning the tyres quite a bit.

As you climb to a higher speed, you actually feel the power of the Rev release under your feet.

5. Tyres and the board

When it comes to tyres, the Boosted Rev is not shy either. Whereas the average e-scooter has 8.5″ tyres, the Rev has 9″ pneumatic tyres.

What is particularly noticeable is the profile of the [9-centimetre-wide] tyres. Pulling away at full speed with the Rev can cause the tyres to spin.

What is noticeable is that the tyres recover grip quickly due to the profile present after this. Do be aware of the power of this scooter when you first hit the road with this.

The ride comfort of an e-scooter is largely determined by the size of the tyres, the type of tyre and the stability of the board. Boosted Boards seems to have found a good balance in this with the Boosted Rev.

At 20 cm wide, the board is wide enough to place two feet (diagonally) side by side. The wide surface provides just that extra bit of stability, which is not superfluous at high speeds.

5.1 Off road with the Boosted Rev

If we could have given one point of improvement to Boosted Boards, it would relate to the suspension.

Although the tyres can handle unpaved terrain [such as grass or sand surfaces] just fine, the vibrations in the steering wheel can be felt well.

The power of the scooter does enable you to ride over such plains [or slopes up to 25%].

Note. The board of the scooter hangs ‘only’ 4 cm above the ground. So if you want to go wild in the dunes, make sure you don’t get stuck on a bump in the grass when riding.

6. Range: up to 32 kilometres on one battery

The maximum range depends on the gear you drive in. The more power you use, the faster the battery drains. With this, the range varies from 20 km (at a constant top speed of 39 km/h) to 32 km (at a speed of up to 25 km/h).

A range of up to 20 kilometres at a top speed of 39 km/h sounds a bit deplorable.

While we partly agree with this, it is not very surprising based on the battery’s specifications. The 370 Wh battery is a bit ‘skinny’ compared to a 1500W motor.

But, the Boosted Rev would not be the Boosted Rev if its somewhat disappointing range was not offset by an added advantage: its short charging time.

7. Battery and charging time

If you are going to use the Boosted Rev for commuting, for example, the charging time of this e-scooter is a big advantage. Indeed, in just three hours, the battery is fully recharged.

This is pretty impressive. If you unpack the Boosted Rev and experience it for yourself [and this is what you want], you would not immediately think that this brute force on two wheels is fully operational again in three hours. By comparison, most e-scooters have an average charging time of between six to 10 hours.

8. Braking systems and braking distance

The Rev features three different braking systems. The brakes are divided between a hand brake, foot brake and the ‘throttle wheel’.

To get from full speed to a stop, it is recommended to use from 2 braking systems at the same time. Here, the combination of hand and foot brakes at the same time feels most natural.

Example: using only the handbrake, from a speed of 30 km/h, you stand still in about 3 seconds. If you also use the foot brake with this, it is about 2 seconds.

The presence of three different braking systems is one of the aspects where you can see that Boosted Boards has thought carefully about the safety of this e-scooter.

9. Weight and portability

The 1500W motor, 9″ tyres and sturdy board add extra weight to the Rev. This doesn’t make it the lightest e-scooter, which will lift you up stairs as easily. The full weight is around 23 kg.

Although lifting the Rev can be a challenge for a lot of people, the folding system does make it possible to take the scooter with you.

Dimensions

Folded out: 101 x 20 x 109 cm

Folded away: 101 x 61 x 51 cm

You can fold and unfold the scooter in about 3 seconds. Once folded, the handlebars automatically attach to the rear wheel with a click system.

11. Handlebar, display and controls

The sportiness of this e-scooter is also reflected in the handlebars. The handlebar is slightly curved, resembling something of a sporty bike.

The handles have a rubber grip with tread, for extra grip. On your left hand is the handbrake. A small bicycle bell can also be found here.

The display is fixed in the middle of the handlebar. Here you can read the speed, battery level and current gear.

Operation of various functions such as gears and lights is not made too difficult. This can all be controlled via the only button present on the display.

Operation: useful to know

  • Switching on: 2-3 sec. press button
  • Switching the lighting on and off: press 2x in succession
  • Changing gear: press button 3 times in succession
  • View battery level: 1 sec. press button (when scooter is switched off)
  • Connecting to the app: 5x consecutive button presses

11.1 The Boosted app

Nowadays, every respectable e-scooter has an accompanying app. With the Boosted app, you can view data such as your current speed, the distance travelled from your last ride, the estimated range and current acceleration.

You connect the app to the Rev by pressing the button on your dashboard five times in quick succession and then tapping ‘connect’ in the app.

Once connected, the app recognises which Boosted vehicle is connected. After this, you can also find the operating instructions of the respective vehicle in the app and you can also control the lights via the app.

12. Lighting

The scooter is equipped with both a front and rear light. The front light consists of a bright LED bulb and is located under the handlebars.

The rear light is located above the rear wheel, on the ‘mudguard’. This mudguard is multifunctional, as it also functions as the rear brake.

Good to know’s

  • The front light is adjustable
  • When you use one of the three braking systems to brake, the rear light also acts as a brake light
  • You switch on the lighting by pressing the button on the display twice in a row

13. Final assessment

The key question: with what grade do we rate the Boosted Rev? Let’s be brief about this. The Boosted Rev gets a big 9 from us. Why not 10? Because it does come with a hefty price tag. Although you get a lot in return, you do have to dig deep before you are the proud owner of this Rev.
