Renting an electric scooter in Madrid: the rules, options and costs

For several years now, it has been possible for tourists to discover Madrid on an electric scooter. There are several possibilities to use an e-scooter during a city trip.

Find out here what options there are, what rules you need to consider and what the costs are.

The rules for using an e-scooter in Madrid

As a driver of an electric scooter in Madrid, you follow the same traffic rules as cyclists. In addition, you need to consider the following conditions:

  • Possession of a driving licence is not compulsory;
  • The use of a helmet is compulsory;
  • A reflective safety vest is mandatory in bad weather and in the dark;
  • You use the cycle path. If the cycle path is missing, you use the carriageway;

  • You must not drive on the pavement, in tunnels or in pedestrian areas;
  • The use of a phone, headphones or wireless earphones during the ride is prohibited.

This is how you can rent an e-scooter as a tourist

There are two ways to rent an electric scooter:

  • Rent a scooter for a day(part) through a local rental company. In some cases, you have the option to book this in combination with a tour.
  • Make use of an electric share scooter.

Several local rental companies allow you to rent an e-scooter for a fixed period. In this case, you pay in advance for the number of hours you want to use the vehicle. The average rental price in Madrid is £8.80 per hour. The following rental companies allow you to book e-scooters online:
