This is how to use an electric scooter in Spain

Want to discover one of Spain’s cities in a flexible way? With an electric shared scooter, you can easily move from A to B and decide where and when to stop. New rules for using an e-scooter have applied in Spain since 2021.

The rules for using an e-scooter in Spain

To use an electric scooter safely and responsibly, follow the same traffic rules as cyclists. Here are the most important rules:

  • There is no minimum age for riding an e-scooter in Spain, except in Valencia (16 years) and Madrid (15 years);
  • The use of a helmet is recommended;
  • There is no driving licence requirement;
  • Drivers should ride on the cycle track (if available). If no cycle lane is available, use the carriageway;
  • It is forbidden to ride an e-scooter with more than one person;
  • The use of a phone, headphones or earphones during a ride is prohibited;
  • You are required to wear a reflective safety vest in poor visibility or when it is dark;
  • It is not allowed to drive on the pavement, in tunnels or in pedestrian areas.

Please note that special liability insurance is not compulsory, with the exception of Benidorm, Alicante and Barcelona.

As a tourist, how do you use an e-scooter in Spain?

In several Spanish cities, you have the option of using an electric shared scooter. Easily find and unlock an e-scooter with the mobile app of the respective provider. Here’s how it works:

App download
Download the mobile app of one of the active providers (check below which providers are active in Spain).
Create account
Create an account and link a payment method. Most providers accept payments via credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Find an e-scooter near you
See in the app where the nearest e-scooter is located. In the app, you can also see the scooter’s battery percentage.
Unlock the vehicle
Scan the QR code on the scooter to unlock the vehicle and start your ride.
Park the scooter
Finished your ride? See in the app where the nearest return location is and put the scooter back where it won’t bother anyone.
Close the ride
Close the ride using the app. After this, you will see an overview of the route travelled and cost of your ride.

Each city or municipality has its own agreements with shared-scooter providers. The largest providers in Spain are:

What do you pay for this on average?

If you use an electric scooter through one of the above providers, you will pay a starting rate and a rate per minute. These charges vary by company

Generally, you pay £0.88 to unlock the share scooter. After that, you pay £0.13 per minute. If you take a 15-minute ride, you pay £2.86.

This is how you benefit from free rides

Most providers provide users with a ‘referral code’ to get more enjoyment out of the app. The code can be redeemed for a free ride. Such a code can usually be found in the app.
