Rent an electric scooter in Lisbon? Here’s how to do it

Since 2019, tourists can use an electric shared scooter in Lisbon. Download an app, scan the QR code on the vehicle and you are ready for the ride. This allows you to ride at your own pace to various highlights, such as the ‘Ponte 25 de Abril’ and ‘Torre de Belém’.

The rules for using an e-scooter in Lisbon

As a driver of an electric scooter in Lisbon, you follow the same rules as cyclists. In addition, you should take the following into account:

  • It is not compulsory to wear a helmet;
  • It is not allowed to drive on the pavement;
  • You do not need to hold a driving licence;
  • You cannot ride two people on one e-scooter;
  • From the law, there is no minimum age set for using an e-scooter;
  • You use the cycle path and when it is not present, you use the carriageway;
  • A maximum speed of 25 km/h applies. This is also the maximum speed of a share scooter;
  • It is not allowed to use a phone, headphones or wireless earphones while driving.

Several providers operate in Lisbon. You can find these providers’ shared scooters on the street and activate them using an app. This works as follows:

Download app
Download the mobile app from one of the active providers in Lisbon. Check which providers are active below.
Add means of payment
Create an account and link a payment method. Most providers accept payments via credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Shared scooter search
See in the app where the nearest sub-scooter is located.
Unlock share scooter
Unlock the scooter by scanning the QR code on the handlebar via the app.
Close ride
At the end of the ride, park the vehicle in the designated zone. End the ride via the app and you will receive a statement of the charges incurred.
