Rent an electric scooter in Helsinki? Here’s how to do it

An electric scooter is called a sähköpotkulauta in Helsinki. As a tourist, you can use an electric share scooter in the Finnish capital.

Download an app, scan the QR code on the scooter and you are ready for the ride. This way, you ride at your own pace to various highlights, such as the Uspenski Cathedral and Roihuvuori water tower.

The rules for using an e-scooter in Helsinki

As a driver of an electric share scooter, you largely follow the same traffic signs as cyclists in Helsinki. In addition, you should observe the following rules:

  • There is no minimum age set for using an e-scooter (note that some local rental companies apply a minimum age of 18);
  • It is not compulsory to hold a driving licence to drive an e-scooter in Finland;
  • The use of a helmet is not compulsory but recommended;
  • You should use the cycle path and otherwise the carriageway;
  • You are not allowed to drive on the pavement. Children under 12 and drivers with e-scooters that have a maximum speed of 15 km/h are allowed to ride at a walking pace on the pavement;
  • It is forbidden to use your phone while driving;
  • It is not allowed to participate in traffic with more than 0.5 promille.

This is how to use an e-scooter as a tourist

There are no local rental companies in Helsinki where you can rent your own e-scooter. However, you can easily use a rental scooter. You will find these vehicles on the street and activate them using an app. This works as follows:

Download the app
Download the mobile app from one of the active providers in Helsinki. Check which providers are active below.
Add a means of payment
Create an account and link a payment method. Most providers accept payments via credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Find a vehicle
See in the app where the nearest scooter is located.
Unlock the scooter
Unlock the scooter by scanning the QR code on the handlebar via the app. You are now ready to ride off.
Finish the ride
At the end of the ride, park the vehicle in the designated zone. End the ride via the app and you will receive a statement of the charges incurred.
